A recent sexual assault on Helen Vestry in her cake shop is identical to two unsolved rapes which occurred ten years earlier at the Pyramid Chocolate factory,run by unpopular Duncan Miller. All the victims were blonde and the attacker smelt strongly of sweat. The team's investigations also uncover a trilogy of seemingly unrelated disasters which befell the factory at the time - the suicide of a female worker,who was not raped,the discovery of a severed finger in a chocolate bar and the prosecution of contract cleaner Alex Close for using illegal immigrants in his work force. Already spooked after Tony tells them a grisly tale of murder at a nearby hotel, Anna and Max are further unsettled by the disappearance of security guard Jagdeep. Anna is sent to deliver a bottle of whiskey to a sheik, who is staying at the hotel after buying antique pistols at a Sotheby's auction. On her way back, she becomes convinced that she's heard a guest murder his wife in one of the bedrooms. Charlie refuses to take her seriously, despite having seen the guest, Mr Johnson, arguing with his wife earlier. As the night wears on, Mr Johnson's behaviour - like sneaking his suitcases out in the middle of the night - worries Anna more and more. With Charlie's help, she snoops around in his room, and is appalled to discover blood streaks in the bath and a bag of rope, tape and rubber gloves. In the bowels of the hotel, Charlie discovers Jagdeep seriously ill in a toilet cubicle. Meanwhile, Anna is terrified when Mr Johnson tries to make her accompany him. Seeing how scared she is, ... The trick was sabotaged, suggesting that Gideon was the intended victim. He had received hate mail linking his act to Satanism and a particularly vocal critic is zealous curate Andrew Maplin. Certainly robed figures conduct midnight rituals in the grounds of Gideon's mansion, once owned by an eighteenth century paganist and one of them kills Andrew, leaving his corpse on a stone altar. Hannah was having an affair as is Gideon's wife, widening the list of suspects, whilst the vicar's wife Lorna Soane is revealed as a descendant of the eighteenth century Satanist. Against the advice of the judge who sentenced George Arthur travels to Great Wyrley, scene of the crimes and meets George's family. He learns that they have suffered past persecution and George's vicar father Sharpurji received hate mail. Having discovered that George was in prison with Hayden Price and is now teaching him to read Sir Arthur meets - through the late Bostock's son Harry - Fred Brooke. He establishes that, as schoolboys Harry, George and Fred fell foul of a violent class-mate known as Speck. Sir Arthur's enquiries lead to the adult Speck, who would seem to be the true culprit of the crimes for which George was blamed - though it is too late to convict. However Sir Arthur has great difficulty in convincing the bigoted police that they arrested the wrong man, particularly as Speck had an alibi for some of the crimes. On discharge Catherine is depressed and her suspicion of Royce as being Ryan's father leads to her hitting out at the little boy with Clare and Richard giving her assurance of her calming influence on him before there is reconciliation. Royce is hiding out in a seedy flat with Lewis, who wants to inform on him. There is a knife fight and Lewis is killed whilst Royce, severely wounded, staggers off in search of Ryan. She says that she was squatting in the building but was attacked by a man she disturbed and who escaped in a car, which Stone partially identifies. He is carpeted for his rude, unorthodox manner but traces the car to the company's security firm and John Meadows, who he is convinced is the murderer. When 16-year old Taylor Davis goes missing, though she is a known runaway, Stone is convinced that she is in danger and discovers that she had joined a website for suicidal teen-agers, two of whom had recently died in suspicious circumstances. Stone visits security guard John Meadows, who found the body of one of the boys, Kieran, but Stone is convinced Kieran was murdered. Aaron Scobie, who sold Taylor drugs, is arrested but denies knowledge of her disappearance and refers Stone to a girl Taylor met through the site called Leanne.
